Files for AI help

Cloud files and projects

Sign in to your workspace, select a project and upload the files you want to store. Project membership controls who can view or change files. If an invited project is missing, check that you signed in with the invited account and that your invitation or membership is still active.

Files preserves original uploads and tracks file versions. Download an original before making changes if you need an independent copy. Supported text can be searched; storing a PDF or Office file does not imply that all of its content has been extracted.

Connect an assistant

Use the cloud MCP endpoint https://api.filesforai.com/mcp in an assistant that supports OAuth. During consent, choose the projects and read or write permissions you want to grant. Your current project membership still applies; a connection cannot grant access that your account lacks.

Read permission allows the assistant to retrieve authorized files. Grant write permission only if you intend to let it change cloud files. Review connection permissions in your workspace and revoke a connection when you no longer need it.

Uploads and changes

Keep the upload window open until completion. If an upload fails, check your connection, available project permissions and the displayed error before retrying. Files supports files up to 5 GB; unsupported formats remain downloadable rather than being executed.

If a save reports that the file changed, reopen the latest version before applying your edits. This avoids overwriting another change. Viewers cannot upload, replace or delete files; ask the project owner to review your role when a write action is required.

Connection errors

If your assistant reports an expired or revoked connection, reconnect through its normal consent flow. A removed membership or reduced project grant requires the project owner to restore appropriate access. Never send account passwords, signing keys or authorization tokens in a support conversation.

Files on your computer

The standalone local Files extension reads folders you select on your computer. It does not upload those folders to the cloud workspace. Read local extension help and its privacy policy for local search, limits and cache controls.
